A Yukon First Nations business, United North Construction Group, has been awarded an over $800,000 contract to demolish Macaulay Lodge, a former long-term care home in Whitehorse.
The company used tools within the Yukon First Nations Procurement Policy such as bid value reductions for being a Yukon First Nations business and hiring Yukon First Nations labour, which ultimately made them the successful candidate for the demolition contract.
Following demolition this summer, the Government of Yukon is planning to redevelop the Macaulay Lodge site to build homes for Yukoners.
Demolition of the building will begin this April and is anticipated to be completed by fall 2022.
An Expression of Interest for the development of housing on the Macaulay Lodge property will be released in the coming days. Collaborative work on zoning requirements to redevelop the lot as housing is underway with the City of Whitehorse.
Once the Expression of Interest is released, it will be available on Yukon Bids & Tenders
The Macaulay Lodge site holds an exciting opportunity to build homes for Yukoners in a central location in Whitehorse, which is close to schools, bus routes and every day services that Yukoners rely on. I look forward to seeing the site redeveloped in the coming months and I thank the City of Whitehorse, the Yukon Housing Corporation and the Department of Highways and Public Works for seeing this project through.
Minister of Yukon Housing Corporation Ranj Pillai
It is encouraging to see United North Construction Group be awarded the contract to demolish the Macaulay Lodge and the first steps to develop the site begin. The contract is being awarded under the Yukon First Nations Procurement Policy and is an important milestone in increasing Yukon First Nations participation in our economy. I am looking forward to the future opportunity for development at the site that will create homes for Yukoners in Whitehorse.
