Colleges across Ontario have partnered on a joint donation of over $210,000 to UNICEF’s Ukraine emergency fund, and Sheridan College is proud to contribute $10,000 to the effort.
Donations to the Ukraine emergency fund will support the organization’s ongoing programs and response to the escalating need in Ukraine by providing communities with safe water, urgent medical aid and health care services, child protection and education. UNICEF has been working in Ukraine since 1997.
“Sheridan is a community of caring and compassionate global citizens,” said Dr. Janet Morrison, President and Vice Chancellor of Sheridan. “As an educational institution, we take our responsibility to care for and support others seriously, both locally and globally. Joining with other Ontario colleges in financial support is one bold way that we are taking action to help people experiencing extreme crisis in Ukraine.”
In addition to this financial donation, Sheridan has connected with each of our Ukrainian and Russian international students (in Canada and overseas) to offer personalized support, referrals and connections to fellow students. We are providing gift cards for groceries and necessities for those in immediate need. Sheridan teams are also working to support Ukrainian and Russian applicants with admissions, immigration and study permit questions as quickly as possible. To date, Sheridan’s Financial Aid team has awarded more than $31,000 in needs-based bursaries to 15 students connected to the conflict.
Additionally, Sheridan joins fellow CiCan member institutions in creating scholarships to support students who are resettling in Canada as a result of the conflict, and seek to continue their education. Sheridan will offer a full scholarship (up to five terms) for a Ukrainian student enrolling in the English Language Studies program as part of their transition to life in Canada.
Altogether, 19 colleges, including Sheridan, contributed to the joint donation, as did Colleges Ontario (the sector’s advocacy organization) and the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS).
