“A new academic term is always filled with so much excitement,” said Dr. Janet Morrison, Sheridan President and Vice Chancellor. “But this fall is truly special as we are finally able to resume campus life in ways that remind us of pre-pandemic times. We are thrilled to welcome so many learners back to campus and feel the energy and vibrancy that is intrinsic to the Sheridan experience.”

To prepare its campuses and welcome back its students and employees, Sheridan teams have painted and brightened up spaces, provided more seating space for students to gather and study, re-opened more food services, ramped up on-campus student support services, completed renovation projects, installed effective indoor and outdoor wayfinding and more.

To support students transitioning into Sheridan life, the College has designed relevant and engaging programming:

  • Learn Well – self-paced modules to help students learn tips for academic success and impactful learning strategies that help them succeed. Students will receive a certificate upon completion.
  • Arrive Well – an interactive module that helps international students familiarize themselves with the Sheridan community, identifies available learning services and builds academic and personal skills to set them up for success.
  • Start Well – helps students brush up on literacy, numeracy, and creative program problem skills to boost college readiness.
  • Babamadizwin: Start Well – an online program that helps Indigenous learners successfully navigate Sheridan and access culturally relevant supports and services. The program helps foster a sense of belonging, community, wellness and connection.
  • Work Well – resume, cover letter, portfolio, and job search tips and the available resources for finding and landing a job while attending Sheridan.

Health and safety remain at the core of Sheridan’s campus experience, with the following protocols in place:

  • the indoor masking requirement has been paused, but Sheridan remains a mask-friendly community
  • hygiene stations are available on each campus
  • the vaccine mandate is currently paused, but the Sheridan community is encouraged to get vaccinated and boosted
  • students and employees are asked to report symptoms or positive cases while on campus

The Fall Term will also mark many milestones for Sheridan. This year, Sheridan celebrates the opening of its newest facility, the 70,000 square-foot student and athletics centre at the Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga. The new five-storey building features a range of inclusive and accessible amenities and athletic facilities, including student lounges, food outlets, gaming areas, dedicated rooms for student groups, club activities, fitness rooms, an elevated running track and Sheridan Student Union space. The development of this building is a partnership between the Sheridan Student Union, Sheridan College, and Sheridan Athletics and recreation, with a design that was informed by students so that it meets the needs of students.

Over 2,300 students attended in-person campus orientation in August. Activities included 102 program meet and greets, 19 marketplace booths, support sessions, a badminton tournament and more. More than 2,100 students from 43 countries attended virtual program orientation, supported by 488 faculty, support staff and student leaders. Activities included 86 virtual program orientation sessions, welcome videos, FAQs and a live Q&A booth, and over 21,000 chat messages were sent.

The Sheridan Student Union hosted nearly 3,000 students during Welcome Week events, which included paint nights, a drag show, an outdoor concert and more. They will also be hosting numerous events to help kick off the Fall Term, including introduction to Krav Maga self–defense classes, an open mic night and a Black History Month Coffee Chat with professional basketball player, designer and entrepreneur Sandra Hamilton.

This fall, Sheridan launches a suite of new graduate certificate programs, including Internet of Things and Machine Intelligence, Urban Design, Clinical Kinesiology, Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs, and the degree completion for the Social Service Worker diploma called Bachelor of Social and Community Development. In-person campus tours are taking place once again, along with career advising sessions for prospective students. Sheridan will be offering an in-person Open House on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sheridan will recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 with a planned day of reflection, learning and remembrance. Classes will not be held to allow students and employees to participate in the dedicated programming.

Sheridan is proud to host the Industrial Mechanics competition for 2022 WorldSkills from October 18-20. This is the largest and most influential skills competition in the world and Sheridan will host the only event in Canada, and one of only three in North America. Between 60 and 70 country/regional representatives will participate in the event, being held at the Magna Skilled Trades Centre at Sheridan’s Davis Campus in Brampton.
